The New Professionals Institute promotes quality professional development for those who serve students by affording participants the space and time to reflect upon their professional experiences, to assess the realities of professional practices, and to further develop their authentic identity within the student affairs profession.

As a new professional, you are uniquely positioned to bridge the emerging needs of students while supporting the evolution toward addressing these challenges. This pre-conference institute will inspire you to explore your potential and ultimately, your role as a leader in the profession.

The Institute is offered in conjunction with the NASPA Western Regional Conference which allows you to build your professional network within regions V and VI.

The New Professionals Institute is designed for student affairs professionals who have five or fewer years of full-time professional experience in various functional areas.

Join us at the 2019 New Professionals Institute!

Institute Goals and Learning Objectives

In this institute, we will feature discussions, panels, and small group activities dedicated to skill and knowledge enhancement. The institute will include both faculty-generated curriculum and curriculum ideas gathered through a participant pre-assessment.

Through the New Professionals Institute, participants will be able to:

  • Reflect upon finding their place within an organization with regard to values and identities, trends in student affairs administration, campus culture, and positioning for purposeful growth;
  • Identify professional enrichment and development opportunities at the new professional level;
  • Connect with, gain insights from, and discuss career planning strategies with seasoned student affairs professionals; and,
  • Improve strategies for effective networking within the field.

The New Professionals Institute is all about your needs and aspirations. As such, the curriculum will address the most common areas for skill and knowledge enhancement for new professionals.
