Bringing together the most diverse and talented educators in the field of men and masculinities research and practice, the Conference on College Men has become the premier venue to explore and examine issues related to men and masculinities in higher education. As particular populations of college men continue to struggle in their postsecondary transitions and engagement, the Conference on College Men will challenge attendees to critically reflect upon how their own identification and expression of gender influences their work with college and university students while also treating them to the most recent scholarship and services in the field.

The Conference on College Men is a collaborative event hosted by NASPA and ACPA. Scholars and practitioners will come together to address the various issues related to men and masculinities in higher education. As college men continue to explore what it means to be a man in today’s society and how their various identities intersect with their gender identity and expression, practitioners must continue to explore various support mechanisms for these students. The conference’s programs will explore evidence-based practices, innovative research, and current trends surrounding college men and masculinities.

You should attend the conference if you want to:

  • Expand knowledge of current trends in gender identity research and how it relates to men and masculinity;
  • Recognize current national and international issues relevant to college men;
  • Learn the ways in which gender identity may intersect with societal expectations of what it means to be a man and how those expectations impact college men

The concept of a professional conference for student affairs administrators focusing on the topic of college men was shepherded within NASPA and ACPA by Dr. Jason Laker, then vice-principal and dean of student affairs at Queen’s University in Ontario and founding chair of the NASPA Men and Masculinities Knowledge Community. The inaugural conference, then titled the Institute on College Males, was hosted by Morehouse College in May 2007. The institute theme was Creating and Achieving Successful Outcomes. The success of this first institute led NASPA and ACPA to collaborate on a second program in May 2009 hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The third, now called, Conference on College Men was held May 22-24, 2011 at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis. The fourth conference was held May 19 – 21, 2013 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The fifth conference was held June 18 - 20, 2015 at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Call for Programs

The call for programs is now closed. Thank you to all who submitted! Announcements of program selection will be made by April 14, 2017.

The increasing need to address gender identity and expression on college campuses is more critical than ever as the understanding of what it means to be a man is continuing to change. The 2017 Conference on College Men is your opportunity to share evidence-based practices from your campus or organization, learn from leading researchers in the field, and engage with other professionals who are committed to understanding men and masculinities.

The 2017 Planning Committee knows it’s presenters like you who will make the conference an impactful event. The Planning Committee is seeking innovative and thought provoking programs from a wide range of professional functional areas. Programs which enhance and progress the understanding of men and masculinities, in either research or practice, will be considered. 

Presenters will be asked to identify the content level of their session; foundational, intermediate, or advanced. Additionally, the content advisory committee will select programs based upon their relationship to the Symposium's learning outcomes.

Conference Themes & Suggested Topics

  • Stopping Gender-Based Violence

    • Increase professional competency regarding Title IX and positively engaging men in the campaign to stop gender-based violence;
    • Identify connections between hegemonic masculinity, men’s lived experiences, and gender-based violence;
    • Explore issues related to gender-based violence (e.g., consent, victim-blaming, bystander intervention) in ways that position men as solutions rather than problems;
    • Develop sexual violence prevention programming informed by research and best practices related to college men as positive change agents.

  • Racialized and Minoritized Masculinities

    • Examine the intersections of masculinities and other dimensions of identity using critical theory;
    • Demonstrate understanding of the racialization and minoritization of masculinities using critical theory and social structures;
    • Analyze historical and social representations of racialized and minoritized masculinities to provide context for contemporary issues;
    • Critically investigate the intersectionality of identities with multiple men’s identities to address privilege and oppression, in order to move towards transformation and liberation.

  • Creating Opportunities for Personal Work in Ourselves and Our Students

    • Articulate the importance of engaging in self-work around issues of gender to create positive masculine images;
    • Identify and implement strategies for engaging in self work;
    • Create meaningful opportunities for students and staff to interrogate masculinities and define their identities in relation to culture and social differences

  • Taking Our Programming from Theory to Practice

    • Develop effective programs informed by theory on college men and masculinities;
    • Build effective coalitions with campus partners to advance work around creating an environment of positive masculinity;
    • Identify and implement effective strategies to engage men on campus that are informed by developmental theory related to college men and masculinities

Masculinities work is becoming increasingly popular and valued in higher education, but figuring out how to get started can be daunting. The pre-conference session is designed to help participants build a foundation to their burgeoning masculinities work. We will cover key terminology, foundational research/theorists, and practical applications any student affairs professional can use in their work with male-identified students. This will be a dialogue-based, interactive, shared learning experience with a particular emphasis on positive masculinity.

  • To center the workshop in dialogue, which will allow for greater audience interaction and shared learning

Reconnecting the Pipeline: Exploring Scholarly Identity Development in Men of Color

Thursday, June 8th • 09.00 AM – 12.00 PM

This workshop is centered on the significance of intersectionality in understanding how men of color (MOC) define, develop and understand their scholarly identities. Several Indiana University professionals will moderate conversations in four focal areas: (1) MOC Identity Development; (2) MOC Student engagement throughout the education pipeline; (3) examples of initiatives implemented by presenters; and (4) SA practitioners' roles and advocacy. Session attendees will also discuss how burnout and compassion fatigue impact those working for the academic success of collegiate MOC.

Coined by Kimberle Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality represents the notion that our identities are multidimensional and complex. Several aspects of an individual  (e.g. race, ethnicity, gender, faith/spiritual beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.) Asante (1992) noted that students who are "centered in their own cultural information are better students, more disciplined, and have more motivation for school work" (pp. 29-30). Ladson-Billings (2000) posits a similar belief through a theory of culturally relevant pedagogy that positions students’ cultural experiences as valuable means to facilitate academic achievement and provide them with tools they need to be successfully both in and out of the classroom. As Robinson and Biran (2004) noted, students cannot excel in an academic environment without being anchored in a firm understanding of their identity.

With this in mind, the information discussed during this workshop will ultimately consider the complexities of identity formation, particularly scholarly identity, for men of color at various stages of their educational journeys.
