The Leadership Educators Institute will engage early and mid-level student affairs educators in active learning and dialogue to assist with program and leadership course development.

Leadership education of college and university students is an important and ongoing process within higher education institutions. Student affairs professionals play an essential role in coordinating, shaping, and evaluating this area by developing leadership courses and programs, creating co-curricular opportunities, and using new technologies. The Leadership Educators Institute (LEI) is an innovative forum geared specifically towards new to mid-level student affairs professionals and leadership educators with these responsibilities. The Institute is coordinated by NASPA, ACPA, and the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (NCLP).

The Leadership Educators Institute aims to create a space where student affairs administrators, educators, and practitioners will discuss current leadership topics:

  • Modern leadership theories about process-based relational leadership, theories of leadership and positive social change, societal good; and models and theories on how students develop leadership capacity and human development;
  • Leadership courses  (credit and non-credit) including innovative syllabi, effective textbooks, incentives for students, experiential learning, service-oriented learning, and virtual learning;
  • Assessment and evaluation of leadership programs and participants including learning outcomes, using CAS Standards, National Leadership Research agenda, ILA program guidelines, Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership Implications for Practice, and the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale as well as contemporary leadership assessments like StrengthsQuest, MBTI, Emotional Intelligence, and Global Mindset;
  • Innovative and intentional practices and programs including: cohort leadership programs, emerging leaders, multi-year programs, distance learning and immersive experiences;
  • Strategy and management of leadership programs including: staff education, fundraising, space design, financial modeling, academic and student development partnerships; and
  • Intersectional role of leadership education in identity development, service-learning, social justice education, globalization, and other functional areas.

Call for Programs

The conference planning committee seeks a diverse range of proposals that effectively link student affairs practice to the values of leadership education.  Presenters will be asked to identify the intended audience for their session; beginner, intermediate, and/or advanced. Additionally, the conference planning committee selected programs based upon the programs' relationship to the conference themes and learning outcomes.  This year's call for programs is now close. Thank you all for your submissions!

  • Leadership Development Theory and Models & Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Social Change Model

    ​Sessions in this theme will contain substantial content in one of the following areas:

    • Effective strategies for translating theory into practice for today's diverse student generation
    • How institutions use leadership development theories and models to successfully engage students
    • Best practices for the application of leadership models to student leadership practice in groups and communities
    • Cutting edge translation and application of leadership theories to leadership skills  
    • Consideration of developmental readiness when planning and implementing programs
    • Impact and evolution of the Social Change Model over the 20 years since its creation

  • Leadership Curriculum and Programs

    ​Sessions in this theme will contain substantial content in one of the following areas:

    • Innovative practices for credit and non-credit courses with unique syllabi, curriculum, pedagogy, and student incentives
    • Successful cohort-based leadership programs (i.e emerging leaders, multi-year programs,
    • identity groups, leadership studies programs)
    • Strategies for overcoming development issues and lack of funding for leadership programs
    • Models and strategies that engage diverse and non-traditional students as leaders

  • Technology, Research, and Assessment in Leadership Programs

    ​Sessions in this theme will contain substantial content in one of the following areas:

    Intersections of research and practice

    • Evidence-based practices
    • Connections between leadership education, student success, and persistence
    • Learning outcomes that guide successful leadership programs and steps for their development
    • Using technology to facilitate leadership development (i.e. virtual portfolios, social media, digital communities and communication)
    • Reviewing new research and scholarship to guide our understanding of leadership education and practice
    • Applying CAS Standards for Leadership Programs and the International Leadership Association guidelines
    • Core Competencies of the Field, emerging the leadership educator identity
    • Intersections of career readiness and leadership education over the life span

  • Leadership in Context

    ​Sessions in this theme will contain substantial content in one of the following areas:

    • Connections and influence of leadership education and student activism, citizenship, ethics, social entrepreneurship and/or political engagement
    • The role of leadership education in career readiness and development of professional competencies  
    • Intersections of leadership education in identity development, critical perspective taking, service-learning, experiential learning, social justice education, globalization, and other functional areas
    • Interdisciplinary approaches to leadership education in various academic and curricular settings
    • Explorations of the purpose, aims, and intentions of leadership education

Based on feedback from past evaluations, this session was created to provide a nuts-and-bolts understanding of the many theories, concepts, and language of leadership. The presenters (esteemed scholars and representatives from ACPA, NASPA, and NCLP) will provide this foundation to help introduce participants to college student leadership education and to help successfully navigate a first LEI experience.

Leadership development provides the foundation for how leadership is enacted in our communities and organizations. However, all too often leadership theory becomes a site of marginalization based on its content and history. This interactive workshop advances an innovative approach drawing on pedagogies that more fully realize goals of equity and justice. Participants will actively engage in the process of theoretical deconstruction and reconstruction modeling the infusion of critical perspectives into leadership education.

View Registration Policies

Cancellation:  The cancellation deadline to receive a refund is September 30, 2016, less a $50.00 administrative fee.  No refunds will be given after the deadline for any reason.  All requests for cancellation and refunds must be in writing and sent to refund@naspa.org. This program may be cancelled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. In this case, fees will be refunded; however, the Institute's planning entities will not be responsible for additional costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines, hotels, and/or travel agencies. NASPA, ACPA, and NCLP are not responsible for weather or travel related problems and will not reimburse registration fees for these issues.

Purchase Orders: Purchase orders will not be accepted as a form of payment. For registrants requiring an invoice to have a check payment processed, please use the Bill Me payment method to complete your registration. The resulting invoice can be found and downloaded under the My NASPA section of the website (must be logged-in), by selecting the View Invoices link from the dropdown menu. Alternatively, email a request to Membership to have a PDF of your invoice sent to you. Bill Me registrations are considered complete and will hold your place in an event, however the balance due must be settled prior to attending.
