The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA General Assembly is the premier educational and networking opportunity for peer educators and their advisors.

This November, students and advisors from across the country will gather in Kansas City to be inspired, share ideas, and build exceptional peer education programs and strategies in health, safety, and student leadership. 

This conference allows attendees to take advantage of a tremendous selection of learning opportunities including 70+ educational sessions, keynote speakers, and featured presentations from renowned speakers. We will also be offering pre-conference learning opportunities, including our Certified Peer Educator (CPE) Training for attendees.

There are many great opportunities for professionals and students throughout the conference. At General Assembly, peer educators gain new ideas and strategies for their programming and awareness events. Advisors learn how to make prevention efforts stronger on their campuses while supporting the students who make it happen.  As a student peer educator you will be able to attend presentations from professionals and other peer groups on high-risk drinking prevention, sexual responsibility, mental health, violence prevention, tobacco prevention, or other health and safety issues.

All campuses are welcome to attend to learn from other institutions and to share successes. NASPA Institutional Member campuses attend at a reduced rate.Campuses with exceptional efforts in health and peer education can submit a program to be considered for presenting a breakout session at the conference.
NASPA Institutional Member campuses with BACCHUS groups can apply for national awards for an outstanding program, group, advisor, or student.Our exhibitors offer an opportunity for any campus to learn of speakers and share prevention resources.

For over 40 years, BACCHUS has found amazing stories of leadership, education, and healthy decision-making on campuses across the nation. In 1975, we started on one college campus because students, with the support of their advisors, wanted to create a positive learning environment where students had the opportunity to succeed. In 2014, BACCHUS was welcomed into the NASPA family, thus setting the stage for peer education to become an integral part of student affairs and the collegiate experience.

General Assembly is the culminating annual event of peer education efforts. It’s impossible to leave without new ideas, new ways of thinking, new information, and new friends. This conference  is perfect to energize students, motivate advisors, and re-commit to making peer education and student health a campus priority.

The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA General Assembly is your opportunity to shift from educating the students on our respective campuses to sharing your talents with peer education groups from across the country. One of the best opportunities to share your talents is to submit an educational session for our General Assembly in Kansas City, Missouri, November 17-20, 2016.

The role of a collegiate peer health education advisor is complex, ever changing, and sometimes poorly defined. There is no handbook, guide, training, or manual when it comes to working with peer health education groups. That is all about to change. At the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA 2015 General Assembly, The Advisor Academy will provide participants with the training, skills and knowledge needed to be an effective collegiate peer health education advisor.

The role of a collegiate peer health education advisor is complex, ever changing, and sometimes poorly defined. There is no handbook, training, or manual when it comes to working with peer health education groups. At the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA 2016 General Assembly, The BACCHUS Advisor Academy will provide participants with the training, skills and knowledge needed to be an effective collegiate peer health education advisor.

The BACCHUS Advisor Academy is designed for individuals who are new to advising peer health education groups. This includes staff and graduate students who are new to the field, as well as seasoned professionals who have not previously advised peer health educators. Whether you come from a public health, student affairs, counseling, or other background, this training will provide the foundation every peer education advisor needs.

To provide advisors with the foundational knowledge needed to effectively advise a peer education group, six hours of formal training will occur during General Assembly at the following times:

Thursday, November 17, 9:00am to 1:00pm (pre-conference workshop)

Friday, November 18,10:45am to 12:35pm (during breakout sessions)

Information covered during this initial training is considered essential knowledge and may include:

  • General concepts, definitions, and theories for peer education advising
  • The impact of peer education on a college or university campus
  • Formats, affiliations, and activities for peer education groups
  • Student involvement and training
  • Obtaining and sustaining resources for your peer education group
  • Legal and ethical considerations
  • Student development and learning outcomes

Certified Peer Educator (CPE) Training

Certified Peer Educator (CPE) Training is an effective strategy for building a well-educated and sustainable peer education group. CPE Training helps peer educators develop leadership skills to be able to successfully create and implement campus programs.

CPE is a comprehensive, 12-hour foundation training suitable for any health and safety focused collegiate peer education group. The training concentrates on the skills needed by all peer educators to:

  • understand the basics of prevention regardless of a particular health specialty
  • become a caring helper to others
  • provide awareness on health and safety risks
  • make referrals to professionals for students who may be at risk
  • conduct educational programs and events
  • increase their leadership abilities
  • increase awareness of personal wellness
  • teach team building

This two day training will cover 9 modules and culminate in a certification exam. The modules will address:

2. Strategies for Change in High-Risk Behaviors

3. Listening Skills

4. Responding and Referral Skills

Society experiences a gap of understanding with every generational turn. It just so happens that the Millennial generation has brought about the largest generation gap that we've ever experienced. We are also experiencing another first; four different generations all having to co-exist and collaborate in organizations at the same time. Compounding the issue is that each has their own ways, styles, expectations, and approaches to getting things done. This can prove to be problematic. This session addresses those issues and more. The audience is taken through an engaging experience of insights and information as to why Millennials see things the way that they do, and strategies and techniques that will help them effectively “Bridge the Gaps” across the different generations.

The CPE Train-the-Trainer Course will providePeer Education group advisors the opportunity to become an official faciltiator of the CPE Course for their campus and students. While this course normally consists of an online, self-paced training format, we will be offering it in person and on-site at General Assembly. The Train-the-Trainer course will be held over two days at General Assembly to allow participants to maximize their time at GA. The course will be held during the final breakout session block Friday afternoon and conclude Saturday morning.


Regular registration deadlined extended to October 24, 2016. Because of the server downtime for registration, we have extended the regular registration deadline until Monday, October 24, 2016. Register your peer education group for the lowest conference rates by the deadline.

Registration is based on NASPA institutional membership status.  If your peer education group is part of a college or university that is an institutional member, you and your group can register as many advisors/students as you would like at the member rate. View Registration Policies

Refunds will be given for cancellations, received in writing by October 21, 2016, less a $50.00 processing fee. In addition, a processing fee of $50.00 per registration will be charged for credit cards declined. We are unable to change payment methods after the initial payment is processed. With prior approval, anyone registered but who cannot attend may send a substitute. Substitution information must come in writing from the registered participant. The institutional membership status of the substitute must be the same as the registrant in order to have the same registration fee applied. Additional charges may apply if the membership status is not the same. The conference may be cancelled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. In this case, registration fees will be refunded; however, NASPA will not be responsible for additional costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines, hotels, and/or travel agencies. NASPA is not responsible for weather-related travel delays or other issues in regard to personal travel and no refunds will be given due to these occurrences. NOTE: All requests for cancellation and refunds must be in writing tobacchusadmin@naspa.org. Due to our food and beverage requirements, no refunds will be granted after November 4, 2016. The suggested dress for the 2016 BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA General Assembly is business casual. Business casual attire typically consists of khakis or slacks, button up shirts, polos, blazers, a dress or skirt. If you are in doubt when packing, please err on the side of caution- athletic wear, clothing with rips/ tears and revealing clothing should be left at home. Remember- you will be representing both your home institution and peer group during the conference.

On Thursday, we recognize school spirit and recommend that you bring an institution or peer education group branded t-shirt or sweatshirt.

Saturday evening there is an Awards Banquet that most participants choose to wear semi-formal dress for. Semi-formal attire includes cocktail dresses, slacks/dress pants, ties, vests, blazers.

Silent Auction

Each year the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA hosts a Silent Auction to fundraise for future General Assembly scholarships.  Donate a swag bag from your campus bookstore, jewelry or art, or memorabilia for your peers to bid on! Please donate your items to the registration desk and don't forget to bit on items throughout the conference.

School Exhibits

Interested in showcasing your peer education group's programs through an exhibit? Register here. You will be provided with a six-foot table during the conference. Details will be sent prior to GA. Register no later than November 4!

Student Advisory Committee Director Elections

Elections for the two 2016- 2017 SAC Directors will be held during General Assembly. The deadline to submit your materials (resume, a letter of intent, photo, and a letter of reference) is November 18, 2016 at 12pm. Please email Laurie with your application materials. 


General Assembly culminates in a banquet on Saturday evening.  During the banquet, the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA are honored to present awards in four categories; Outstanding Student, Outstanding Advisor, Outstanding Program and Outstanding Peer Education Group.  The deadline for nominations is October 14, 2016.


The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA offers several scholarships to mitigate the cost of attending General Assembly each year.  The deadline to apply for a scholarship is October 6th, 2016.
