The Mid Manager Institute for Region II is an intensive, four day program geared for professionals with more than five years of experience ideally at the assistant director level or higher. It provides an excellent opportunity for advanced Student Affairs professionals to interact with and learn from experienced, senior administrators in the field.

The Mid Manager Institute for Region II is an intensive, four day program geared for professionals with more than five years of experience ideally at the assistant director level or higher. It provides an excellent opportunity for advanced Student Affairs professionals to interact with and learn from experienced, senior administrators in the field.  

The Institute provides opportunities for participants to enhance their skills in key leadership areas and further develop their ability to work effectively within the campus environment.  Example topics include: managing up and down, navigating campus politics, assessment, supervision, financial management and strategic planning. 

Participants spend four days together, with six senior administrators, immersed in studying, discussing and learning how to be the best student affairs professionals they can be.  The Institute is intended to enhance their career and professional growth opportunities, and greatly increase their value and potential contribution to their institutions. 

Participants and faculty are grouped into clusters. Sessions will be presented in a variety of formats including invited speakers, faculty presentations and panels, small group discussions and case study presentations. All sessions will be highly interactive. Large group sessions are interspersed with opportunities for the clusters to share and reflect on what they’re learning. 

The students and faculty spend the entire time together from morning breakfast through evening cluster discussions. Time is allotted to personally mentor each participant and help with goal setting and career planning.

I’ve learned just as much about myself and my colleagues ( now friends) as I did about the complexity of managing large institutions.


This was truly a well-run institution. The cluster groups provided great opportunities to share experiences and learn from each other. The faculty was engaged as well as human. It’s rare to find a group of senior student affairs professionals willing to share real experiences and missteps that we can learn from. Overall, very well done indeed!


Before arriving, I was not sure what to expect from this experience but I must say, I do not regret one moment of my time here. I feel that I have grown more in these four days, than U did in my two year graduate program. This was not just about theory, this was about building me.


Inspiring and refreshing training for mid-managers. This institute has been by far one of the best professional development seminars/institutes I have received. I experienced the full engagement of faculty while creating a network with colleagues from all across NASPA Region II.


Gained from MMI this experience has helped me clarify my present and future career goals. I have been able to discuss with faculty and my peers the profession and gained friendships, confidence and a love for student affairs. Warren Kelley was my faculty cluster leader. He inspired, rejuvenated and helped clarify my goals and career path.


This week allowed me to reflect and envision the future of my career in student affairs with the help of amazing mentors and colleagues in the field.


The mid-managers institute was a great opportunity to learn not only from the faculty as well as our peers. It was so beneficial to take time to think about/process functional ideas in theory rather than making decisions in the midst of juggling all our jobs tasks.


Having access to the faculty and colleagues outside of my home institution has been amazing. Both the faculty and students have a wealthy wisdom and MMI has given me the opportunity to build a strong network as I plan for the future.


Warren!! I am jazzed up to be writing this. He is amazing person, leader, mentor and human being. I can write so much but I just genuinely loved meeting, spending time and hearing his thoughts on student affairs and our cluster.


This is an intensive, comprehensive program offering professional guidance in the Student Affairs profession and significant tools to support professionals in their daily work. I highly recommend this training week.


Every professional should have the chance for this life changing experience. To be surrounded by outstanding colleagues who are willing to share their journey. To spend 5 days with some of the top professionals in our field, learning how to be better professionals in our respective fields. Learning how to be better professionals ourselves was priceless!-

I got exactly what I needed at the MMI 2012. Beyond being re-energized, I learned best practices that I believe will help me be better student affairs professional. You will learn sound advice and be able to ask questions about your current and future career experiences that will be invaluable. In addition, the closeness you will share with your cluster will quite possibly be life changing.


Prior to MMI I had no knowledge of Dr. Pennington so I didn’t realize the gift that was bestowed to me to be selected for her cluster. I’ve learned so much from her wisdom, appreciated her candor, and I am so happy she has become a trusted colleague and mentor. The advice she imparted will help me to be a better student affairs professional. I hope to be in touch with her for years to come.


NASPA Region 2 MMI is the most unique professional experience I’ve had. It provided intellectually stimulating sessions coupled with supportive, challenging and thought provoking opportunities to share with colleagues and faculty which are very diverse yet like-minded. It has inspired me to deepen my involvement in NASPA and solidified my confidence in the future for student affairs.


I came in to MMI 2012 seeking an opportunity to connect with other professionals who are also walking the mid-level path of our profession. I gained immensely valuable advice, spot on insights and amazing professional connections. I am confident my career will be the better for it.
