For an organization with a storied past and always moving forward, there is no better place to come together in our centennial year than Milwaukee, a scenic, vibrant city with a rich cultural history, filled with bustling communities striving together toward a greater whole. We hope that you'll be one of the many student affairs professionals who come to the "gathering place by the water" in November as we look to connect, explore, and begin to lay the foundations for the next 100 years.

Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAO) Institute

Saturday – Sunday, November 10-11, 2018

Come join other IV-East Senior Student Affairs Officers (defined as Vice Presidents for Student Affairs and “number twos”) for an institute experience designed to connect and inform. The institute will begin on Saturday afternoon with a City Tour of Milwaukee followed by a visit to Workshop Architects for a presentation on current construction projects across Region IV-E. On Sunday before the main conference starts, there will be a half-day institute covering a range of topics. The SSAO lounge will be open on Monday where you can grab a quick coffee, interact with other SSAOs, or get some campus work done in between sessions.

Registration is $50.00 per person and includes light refreshments on Saturday, coffee and pastry on Sunday morning and lunch on Sunday is included.  Late registration is $75.00 per person.

Not at odds: Free speech, equity, and inclusion on today's college campuses

Recent portrayals of the so-called crisis of free speech on college campuses are often framed as pitting free speech in opposition to equity and diversity. As recently reported in Inside Higher Ed, however, instead of looking to hide from new ideas, today’s students seem to be looking for ways to engage with them directly in ways that engender respect for all participants, if not all opinions. Rather than impose external conditions and restrictions on institutions and students as we work to establish both meaningful protections for those who have experienced past trauma and create spaces for open and honest discourse on fraught topics, our institutions of higher education should be allowed the freedom to establish guidelines and rules for deliberation appropriate for their communities within our already established free speech case law. An overview of recently proposed and enacted state legislation pertaining to free speech on college campuses, specifically laws and court cases that might restrict the use of free speech zones on college campuses, will set the stage for this interactive workshop. Drawing examples from campuses that have hosted controversial speakers in the past two years, participants will explore proactive steps institutions can take to anticipate or possibly prevent discord, balancing strong respect for equity and inclusion while still protecting free speech. Participants will engage in group discussion to review their own campus speech policies to identify ways they could be proactive in anticipating changes legislation in their state may necessitate.

Presenter: Teri Lyn Hinds, NASPA Director of Policy Research and Advocacy NASPA

Presenter Information:

Teri Lyn Hinds is the Director of Policy Research and Advocacy with NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. With over a decade of experience in higher education policy analysis, institutional research, assessment, and planning, Teri has a comprehensive view of effective and appropriate data use for the support of student success from campus to capitol hill. Since joining NASPA in February 2017, her policy portfolio has expanded to include a variety of issues salient to Student Affairs professionals, including college costs and affordability, campus sexual assault prevention and response, free speech and controversial speakers on campus, campus carry of firearms, and more. Previously, as the Director of Research and Data Policy for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), Teri worked primarily in institutional accountability and transparency as Project Manager for the Voluntary System of Accountability and Student Achievement Measure initiatives. Her prior work in institutional research, assessment, and strategic planning on two regional comprehensive campuses in the upper Midwest has been an invaluable foundation to the role she plays in Washington, DC. Teri holds a bachelor’s degree in Government from Cornell University and a master’s degree in Social Service Administration with a concentration in health administration and policy from the University of Chicago.

In our climate of exclusion, resurgence of hate and hate groups, continued discrimination based upon identities, and extreme political divides, the need for focused and intentional social justice work is critical to all of our campuses and seems to be more difficult than ever. This workshop will utilize frameworks to discuss how we arrived at this point, where we need to focus our time strategically, and allow participants to engage in dialogue with colleagues to develop a plan to address a social justice concern within their scope of influence. An intentional focus will be placed on the individual participant and how they can influence transformative change within their campus role.

Presenter: Steve Bryant, Director of Diversity & Community Involvement at Eastern Michigan University

Presenter information: Currently serving as the Director of Diversity and Community Involvement at Eastern Michigan University, steve bryant works to support the Department’s mission of supporting and empowering minoritized students, providing intentional learning experiences, and challenging systems and structures that perpetuate inequities.  steve is in the process of finishing his dissertation at the University of Missouri – Columbia focusing on White faculty members who incorporate racial dialogue within the classroom.  His areas of expertise include building institutional infrastructure for inclusion, diversity, equity and inclusion strategic planning, and development towards eradicating inequities.
