Sunday was the launch of the 99th NASPA Annual Conference. Our host city of San Antonio came to life as nearly 7,000 members of our community gathered for the historic event. We are thrilled to be joined to by so many colleagues from across the globe representing every sector of student affairs and services. Attendees are in for an enriching and empowering experience as we spend the next three days celebrating our strengths, seeking out deeper understanding, and shaping our path forward as a profession.
First day highlights included a spirited Opening Session featuring lively local music and dance from Urban 15, a moving blessing from Isaac Alvarez Cardenas, a member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan nation from the American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Mission, and culminating in a vibrant question and answer sessionwith featured speaker Anderson Cooper, brought to #NASPA17 by our strategic partner, the National Society of Leadership and Success.
We have one important correction to note: During our opening session, we announced the recipients of our Innovation Grant winners. We incorrectly stated the name of the institution that received the award for their EmpowerMENt proposal. The winner was Newbury College in Brookline, Massachusetts. We sincerely regret the error and apologize to Newbury College for the mistake.
Attendees concluded Day One by dining and dancing the night away at NASPA’s own version of Night in Old San Antonio (“NIOSA”), a San Antonio traditional celebration.
